King William Island

zone, King William Island is located 3.5 km across the Simpson Strait from the Canadian mainland's Adelaide Peninsula (at bottom of the image). To the east, northeast and north the island is bordered by the Boothia Peninsula — located across the James Ross Strait, St. Roch Basin, and Rae Strait, respectively; to the northwest, the Victoria Strait separates it from Victoria Island (76 km distant). The southwestern corner of the island guards the entrance into the Queen Maud Gulf — the wide channel separating Victoria Island from the mainland.

The island has a maximum dimensions of 155 km by 120 km. In the main it comprises a gently undulating, low-lying, limestone-based plain that is marked by low ridges, gravel beds, sand patches and by the occasional small hillock. The defining feature of this post-glacial landscape is its profusion of interconnected small lakes and streams that can be found throughout the island. The highest point of 137 m above sea level — at Mount Matheson — is located upon the Gibson Peninsula on the island's southeastern side (the north coast of the Gibson Peninsula is still lined by ice in the above image taken in July).
