Nottingham Island

Nottingham Island is located at the northeastern entrance into Hudson Bay, situated within the broad channel that separates Baffin Island from the Ungava Peninsula region of the Canadian mainland; on the western side this stretch of water is known as the Foxe Channel, on the east as the Hudson Strait. The Ungava Peninsula lies 54 km to the southwest, the Foxe Peninsula of Baffin Island 88 km to the north and the large Southampton Island 86 km to the west.

Nottingham Island is the largest and southernmost of a trio of islands — Nottingham Island, Salisbury Island and Mill Island. The smaller islands of this loose grouping are located 23 km to the northeast (Salisbury Island) and 49 km to the north (Mill Island). In addition to the three main islands there are many smaller islands and islets. Of these the most significant are: Putnam Island (off Mill Island) and Fraser Island (off Nottingham Island).

Nottingham Island (1,372 km²) has a maximum northwest to southeast length of 49 km (along the western coast) with a maximum width of 35 km. From its low-lying and rocky western coasts the terrain of Nottingham Island rises gradually through smooth slopes to an upland region that occupies the central and eastern sections of the island. The upland zone comprises many small, but steep-sided, hills amongst which are located numerous interconnected lakes and streams. Average elevations in this region are between 200 m and 350 m above sea level. The upland terrain comes to an abrupt halt on the eastern side of the island, where the interior drops sharply via steep-sided slopes and cliffs to the sea.
