Île Vanier is the third largest island of the Bathurst Island group (after Bathurst Island and Cameron Island). It is one of several islands located on the western edge of the Erskine Inlet of Bathurst Island. It lies southwards, 3.75 km across the Arnott Strait, from the slightly larger Cameron Island and 2 km northwards, across the Pearse Strait, from the narrow Massey Island. The Cape Hooper and Evans Bay regions of northwestern Bathurst Island lie just 9.3 km to the east from Vanier's Turnbull Point.
Île Vanier (1,126 km²) is approximately oval in shape, measuring 53 km (from east to west) with a maximum north to south width of 28 km. The island's terrain consists of a series of low hills, rising to around 200 m above sea level, that are divided by deeply eroded river channels.
