Bay and the Foxe Basin, in the region where the Roes Welcome Sound and Frozen Strait lead into Repulse Bay, White Island lies immediately northwards from Southampton Island (across the 1 km wide Corner Strait). The southern sections of the Melville Peninsula lie to the north and the slighter larger Vansittart Island is located 20 km to the west (top-right in the above image), across the Frozen Strait. The northernmost sections of the island are located within the Arctic Circle.
White Island measures 55 km in length (orientated northwest to southeast) with a maximum east to west width of 20 km, covering an area of 789 km². Terrain on the western side of the island consists of a low coastal belt that rises sharply to a hilly landscape — essentially an extension of the upland terrain that runs along the northern sector of Southampton Island — that covers most of the island. Numerous smaller islands and islets are located off the eastern and northern coastlines.
