The Montgomery Islands lie some 20 km off the central Kimberley coast, opposite the Doubtful Bay (to the east) and Collier Bay (to the south) regions. The kingfisher Islands lie 17 km to the southwest.
The islands lie among the extensive areas of sandbank that occur at the centre of the large Montgomery Reef formation. The reef, covering an area in the region of 270 km², is some 80 km long, containing large areas of shallow lagoon and seagrass beds. Due to the 10 m+ tides that occur along this region of the Kimberley the whole reef emerges up to 5 m out of the sea at low tide, with vast sheets of water pouring of the reef in waterfalls as the tide ebbs.
