Cherbaniani Reef

Cherbaniani Reef

The northernmost emergent feature of the Lakshadweep archipelago, Cherbaniani Reef (also known as Baleapani Reef) lies 36 km north-northwest from Byramgore Reef; the main population centre of the archipelago, Kavaratti is located 205 km to the southeast.

Sharktooth-shaped, with its longest axis orientated from north to south, Cherbaniani Reef has a maximum length of 14 km, with a width of up to 5 km. At some 170 km² in area it is one of the largest structures of the Lakshadweep.

Consisting largely of shallow reef formations, Cherbaniani Reef contains a deep lagoon basin on the east and few sand cays on the northern and eastern rim.
