Kadmat

Kadmat, Lakshadweep

Centrally located within the Lakshadwep archipelago, the island of Kadmat (shown above in false-colour, with vegetation cover in red) lies 67 km northeast from the island of Kavaratti and 32 km southwest from Kiltan; its closest neighbour is the small island of Amini (on the northeastern edge of the large Pitti Bank formation), 5 km to the southwest.

Located upon a small coral platform Kadmat (3.2 km²) is highly elongate in appearance, measuring 9 km in length with typical widths of only a few hundred metres; the southern end of the island is particularly narrow, measuring less than 50 m across. Built from coral fragments and coral sands that overly coral conglomerate, the island is low and flat rising to no more than 2 m above sea level.

A very shallow lagoon, averaging 2 to 3 m in depth, and covering an area of some 37 km² extends to the west.
