Great Sitkin

Great Sitkin, Aleutian Islands

Located in the Andreanof group, 40 km to the northeast from Adak, lies the 156 km² island of Great Sitkin. The island sits to the north of a group of small islands (Chugul, Igitkin, Little Tanaga, Tagalak and Umak) that lie between the Adreanof's main islands of Adak and Atka.

Great Sitkin presents a dramatic profile with its summit reaching a height of 1,740 m above sea level. The approximately oval-shaped Great Sitkin Volcano occupies most of the northern half of the island, measuring 8 km from north to south and 11 km from east to west. The volcano has a complicated structure formed by a series of overlapping cones, domes and calderas. The southern half of the island is deeply eroded into a series of ravines and ridges, bays and peninsulas — remnants of an older volcanic structure.
