Located 17 km across the Pitt Strait from Chatham Island, Pitt Island (Rangiauria) is the largest of the numerous small islands and islets that lie clustered to the southeast of Chatham Island. It has a generally rocky coastline with numerous headlands, offshore reefs and rocks; other sections of the coast are lined by high cliffs or beaches of sand. The interior has gentle slopes that reach a height of 241 m at Waihere on the west coast.
