Birnie — with an area of 0.2 km² — is the smallest of the Rawaki islands and is located 88 km west-northwest from Rawaki and 77 km south from Abariringa — effectively being located at the centre of the Rawaki Islands group. The island measures 1.2 km by 500 m, and contains a small hypersaline lagoon. Fringing reefs line the shores of the north, east and south coasts.
