Fakarava — the second largest of the Tuamotu atolls, after Rangiroa — is located in the northwestern region of the Tuamotu Archipelago, lying between Faaite (18 km to the southeast) and Toau (14 km to the northwest).
This large atoll is of an unusual rectangular shape (see mosaic image), with a length of 60 km and a width of 25 km, enclosing a lagoon of over 1,112 km² in area. In the northeastern corner of the atoll is the 1 km wide Garuae Pass.
