Tubuai

Tubuai, Tubuai Islands

Located just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, 210 km southeast from Rurutu and 180 km northwest from Raivavae, Tubuai — the administrative centre of the islands — is the largest of the Tubuai Islands at 44 km², being 8 km in length and up to 5.5 km in width. It consists of two volcanic domes forming a massif that reaches a height of 422 m at Mt. Taita. These mountains are surrounded by a raised coral limestone platform which extends across the island and between the two ranges.

On the eastern side of the lagoon (bottom in this image) are a number of smaller islets: Motu Toena, Motu Roa, Motu Motiha, Motu Ofai and Îlot de Sable.
